Touring Arizona Hot Springs
Published in Digital by Falcon Publishing ()
Average review score:

Not So HotThis book didn't even come close to living up to it's claim of listing 36 of "the best" hot springs in Arizona; for one thing, there aren't that many. The first three listings say right in them that bathing or swimming is prohibited, hardly among what we'd call the best hot springs. One listing dried up half a century ago and there's been no soaking there since. Many typos or wrong words show poor proofreading and little attention to detail. We couldn't recommend this book to anyone. HOT SPRINGS & HOT POOLS OF THE SOUTHWEST by Gersh-Yound is much, much more accurate and is worth the price. Mr. Bischoff needs to check his facts before making claims. Caveat Emptor
Follow That SteamI have toured hot springs in the Azores, England and California and appreciated Bischoff's directions, historical references, and insight into the hot springs of Arizona. He alerted his readers of all ages and abilities to the joys and hazards of the hot springs and was particularly clear about the directions to each site. It is obvious in reading that he took careful notations and researched the geologic and social history of each area. I look forward to taking a spring tour of Bischoff's Arizona hot springs.

The Warrior Maiden: A Hopi Legend (Bank Street Ready-To-Read Level 3)

Average review score:

The Warrior Maiden: A Hopi LegendThis book is about a brave, Hopi girl named Huh-ay-ay who helps save her tribe's pueblo from the Apache Raiders. The title alone captured my attention because it is not often we hear a girl called a warrior. Huh-ay-ay's quick thinking, self-confidence, and bravery hepled save the tribe. Children would enjoy this book.

American Byzantium: Photographs of Las Vegas (University of Arizona Southwest Center Book)
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (September, 2001)
Average review score:

Its okay but not mind blowing. It's a smallish book with not quite the usual photos that we normally see and are familiar with. I love Las Vegas and love Las Vegas books. This one is just one of the bunch. Not really a stand out but all together not bad. Its a good to average read, photos interesting but not that memorable. Keep looking I think, there are better books out there.

Arizona Panhandle
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (September, 1989)
Average review score:

Laconic humour makes fan out of Western snobI have to admit, I don't read Westerns. In fact, this was the first one I'd ever picked up. But if you've gathered anything from the title of my review, it's made a fan out of me.
A nice way for a beginner to break into this genre, Panhandle has a simple, attractive premise - loner protagonist partners up with a lively ranch girl while on a mysterious quest of some sort - and is written with warmth and a laconic sense of humour.
Without waxing too much, this is a rewarding read and I'll be seeking more of Clarke's work in the future (nb - also writes under 'Lauran Paine').

Arizona Traveler's Handbook
Published in Paperback by Moon Travel Handbooks (May, 1990)
Average review score:

Old EditionAs the author, I recommend the new 7th edition (1999), retitled "Moon Handbooks: Arizona." It offers many new sights and practicalities as well as a major revision of the old reliables.

Arizona: A Geography (Geographies of the United States)
Published in Textbook Binding by Westview Press (February, 1981)
Average review score:

Dated, Out of Print with Its UsesSeems was directed towards jr. high, high school and community college audiences - would be useful for writing brief school reports on Arizona.
When looking about the net, online and in bookstores for info about Arizona I couldn't find anything that seemed comparable. There is useful info; necessary to take with a grain of salt as statistics are dated. If I want more info about the fine state of Arizona I believe I'll need to go to Arizona sources.

Arizona: The Spirit of America (Art of the State)
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1998)
Average review score:

Fun & FactualMy facination with Arizona began as a child when my grandmother would show me her Arizona Highway magazines, especially the Christmas issues. This little book contains lots of interesting facts on Arizona plus photos of beautiful artworks. I was surprised when I noticed one of the paintings is on display in my hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee at the Hunter Museum of Art.

Call It Destiny: Arizona (Men Made in America, No 3)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (July, 1993)
Average review score:

synopsisARIZONA DESPERADO-Jake Cavender was cool on the outside, but inside beat a heart as hot as the desperate sands. He surprised Heather Strand by agreeing to an arranged marriage, evan if he had no intention of holding to her hands-off prenuptial agreement. Jake always played the gentleman-but Heather's sassy velvet mouth was turning him into a desperado...or just plain desperate. He'd agreed to take her, minus one clause-the marriage bed. He'd have a marriage...in every sence of the word.

Canyons of the Colorado
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (October, 1996)
Average review score:

Contents are superb, but spoiled by bad organization. As prior reviews state, the text is well-selected from Powell's journal, and the photographs are superb. But how can the author publish the journal of an explorer without a map keyed to the dates of journal entries? The photographs are superb, but again, not keyed to a map, or even associated with the text. The identifying data for each photo is listed in the front of the book, but is not given on, or near the photograph. A potentially superb book, but, because of these defects and faults, one that is maddening to read.

The Colorado Plateau: A Complete Gude to the National Parks and Monuments of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Western Colorado, and Northwestern New Mexico
Published in Paperback by Northland Pub (March, 1998)
Average review score:

Looking for travel informationThe description of The Colorado Plateau was appealing as I enjoy visiting our nations National Parks. This book met the minimum criteria described on the cover of the book. It was a fairly complete guide to the National Parks. I was hoping to gain and develop my own impressions from the impressions and experience of the author and thus develop a sense of those places I'd like to visit most. The book also provides historical information for many of the areas, which is interesting. The author is also very opinionated concerning land use which to me are political issues. I found this very distracting, having to skip paragraphs to get back to the information this book advertised it was all about. Also, the book could have done a better job of providing maps that showed the locations and routes into the Parks it was discussing. I found myself having to keep a map close by of each of the States that were discussed, something that could have easily been presented better in each section of the book. Otherwise, the organization of the content of the book was very good.
